Pantone- Color of the Year

11 Dec

There’s a first time for everything…Pantone2016-1
Have you ever noticed how certain colors seem to pop up each year in every aspect of design? That is largely due to Pantone, a company based in New Jersey that uses a color matching system for fabric, paint and plastics. Each year they determine a Color of the Year that we will see in fashion, interior and exterior, and graphic design. And it’s that time again! Pantone announces their trending color of the year…and a surprise it is! For the first time ever, Pantone has co-colors of the year. Meet Rose Quartz and Serenity:

Leatrice Eisman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, had a lot to say on the selection. “Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”

What we find most surprising besides the two colors sharing the spotlight, is that they are 1) pale shades instead of deeply saturated colors like we have seen in the past, and 2) they are not a common pairing as we tend to look at these colors determining boy or girl. This is intentional with this forward-thinking explanation from the brand: “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using color as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to color usage.”Pantone2016-3

You may be thinking, how do I incorporate these two colors into my home in a sophisticated way? What we suggest is start small if pastels are new to you. Start with using the colors as accessories instead of making them the main focus. Find a fabric and make a pillow or throw with it.
