Chocolate is more than a delicious, sweet treat.

30 Mar

It’s a bold and luscious interior design choice.Chocolate1

Just like the chocolate we love to eat, the color chocolate used in interior décor is dark, luscious and rich.
Chocolate is a bold color that can be used in a similar way as black, but with more interest and a bit of softness. This beautiful color can communicate high-style or it can be very warm and inviting, depending how you use it.

  • Together with pastels, such as baby blue, light pink or butter yellowChocolate2
  • Layered with several lighter neutrals, such as cream, taupe, gray and beige
  • Paired with snowy white
  • Integrated with earth tones, like gold, apricot and sage green
  • Combined with bold colors, such as tangerine, acid green or tomato red

Like most dark colors, chocolate works best as an accent rather than as the predominant color in a room. And it’s important to surround large areas of chocolate with light colors to ensure a room doesn’t appear dark and closed.Consider these design elements for a touch of chocolate in your house:Chocolate3

  • A painted accent wall
  • Rugs and carpeting
  • Fabrics for upholstery, draperies and headboards
  • Table, bed and bath linens
  • Lacquer surfaces, such as table tops and furniture
  • Tile, backsplashes and countertops in kitchen and bath

Ready for an interior design color that reminds you of one of your favorite treats? Think chocolate for decorating this year.

A clean and simple design style can make your life less stressful.

16 Mar

The look of your home can give you peace of mind and a sense of calm.CleanandSimple2

Many of us have feelings of stress because we’re overwhelmed by the demands in our lives. What better goal to consider in your home decorating plans than to create a home environment that’s calming and relaxing, both on the eyes and on the soul.

Simple doesn’t mean plain or unattractive. Simple design can create a sophisticated, traditional, elegant look or a modern, minimalist feel. The bottom line is reducing chaos and over-decoration, and minimizing clutter and confusion.

  • Plan only one or two focal points per room, so you can really “see” the beauty, rather than having a hodge podge of color and design elements.CleanandSimple3

  • Limit the number of colors in your design and stick with gentle colors, rather than bold primary colors.

  • Make color transitions gentle. Avoid making too strong a statement between dark and light colors, such as black and white. (However, keep in mind that you may want energizing colors in a room; for example, in a kitchen or home office where you’d like to be engaged and active.)

CleanandSimple1Once you’ve created a simple, clean design, enjoy it! Allow yourself relaxing time to read a book or watch your favorite TV show, without answering the phone or responding to text messages. Spend time with your family or friends in a quiet way, without over planning your activities.

Achieving a calm and simple home environment can help you find peace of mind every day.

Rose Quartz and Serenity are the colors of the year, according to the Pantone Color Institute.

9 Mar

Try using these calming shades of pink and blue in your interior plan.

The Pantone Color Institute has selected two shades – Rose Quartz and Serenity – as their colors of the year for RoseSerenity1interiors. Each year, Pantone selects a color that expresses a mood and an attitude for the year; and this is the first time the organization has selected two shades as color of the year!

These soft shades of calm blue and serene pink make us feel more secure and at peace. When used in home décor, they add to our sense of well-being, helping take away the daily stresses of life in our own home environments.RoseSerenity3

“Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute®. “Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and sense of composure, while Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.”

RoseSerenity2Whether you use each color alone or use them together in your home environment, this year think Rose Quartz and Serenity for upholstery and drapery fabrics, rugs and carpeting, paint, tile and backsplashes, bed and table linens, and accessories.

Soften your home environment this year by decorating in Rose Quartz and Serenity.

Decorative mirrors expand the feel of a room and add drama.

Mirrors1Their beauty is a reflection of your design style.

Ever thought about using mirrors as a design element rather than just as a functional tool to check your look before you leave the house? Mirrors look beautiful in almost any room, not just the bathroom or entry way. And sometimes they have no function at all; for example, if they’re composed of lots of small panes or have a distressed surface that’s hard to view a reflection from.

Mirrors2Mirrors come in all shapes, sizes and frame styles to complement any décor.

The look of a mirror adds pizazz, while the reflective nature of the glass makes a room appear larger and can also make a room seem lighter and more airy.

A mirror can be the focus of a room or it can be a point of side interest.

Sometimes you don’t even have to hang mirrors on the wall! A very large mirror that goes almost from floor to ceiling can be propped against a wall, but do make sure it’s secure and won’t fall down. You can also group several mirrors to anchor a wall.

Then there’s the issue of the frame.Mirrors3

A frame can be the major focal point of a mirror and take up a lot of the square footage or it can be very simple, letting the glass surface be the star. Frames can be made of wood, metal, ceramic, tile, lacquer or stone. Or a mirror can even be frameless.

Think about adding mirrors to your décor this spring. They will literally be a reflection of your own design style!
