Vertical and Horizontal Blinds

30 Nov

Vertical and Horizontal Blinds

Blinds can be categorized in several different ways, including orientation, material type, style, and how they operate. Regardless of how you categorize them, they are one of the most versatile window treatments available for your home.

Blinds can be made with slats that run horizontally or vanes that run vertically. Which orientation you choose depends largely on the size of the window you want to cover and which way it opens. Horizontal blinds are seen more regularly because the majority of windows in homes are a manageable size and open up and down. Using horizontal blinds on this type of window allows you to raise or lower the blind to match the level of your window, so your blind is not being blown around by the incoming breeze. If you have extra wide windows, multiple horizontal blinds can be hung side-by-side to avoid having one blind that is too large to adjust.

Vertical blinds are often used on sliding glass doors because they open and weintraubbedroomclose sideways and are easy to operate even though they are large. Another use for vertical blinds is to cover windows that open to the side rather than up and down. They can be moved to the side when the window is open to allow air in while still covering the part of the window that is closed.

Types of Materials Used in Custom Blinds

Wood – The grain in real wood blinds give a natural pattern to your window treatments. They can be stained or painted to blend into their surroundings or make a statement. Parkland® horizontal blinds are available in basswood, abachi, or ash that is harvested from managed forests. Vertical blinds can also be made with wood making it easy to match blinds of different orientations.
Wood alternative – Everwood® horizontal blinds look like wood, but are more able to withstand heat and humidity, making them a great alternative for a bathroom, kitchen, or sunroom. Like wood blinds, they are available stained or painted and offer a variety of decorative tapes.
Aluminum – Both horizontal and vertical blinds are available in aluminum. Unlike lower quality aluminum blinds from big box stores, Hunter Douglas aluminum blinds resist denting and bending, ensuring your blinds will continue to look like new for years.
Fabric – For a softer look, consider vertical blinds with fabric vanes. They quietly adjust to filter or block out light, or can be moved out of the way for an unobstructed view of the outdoors.
Vinyl – Vinyl vertical blinds offer the widest selection of colors, patterns, and textures. They are durable, easy to clean, and give you several light control and privacy options. If you like the look of fabric, but prefer the convenience of vinyl, Cadence® blinds have curved vanes that give the appearance of folds of fabric.

lamps-and-lighting1

A beautiful selection of lamps will light up your decor.

Lamps are not just for lighting; they add a finishing touch of style to most any room. Often lamps are an afterthought lamps-and-lighting2to a decorating project when, but in fact, they can be the perfect fine-tuning for a room, creating a feeling of warmth and soft mood.

Of course, function is key when considering lighting for your home. That’s why it’s best to work with a expert who can help you plan your complete lighting scheme, including overhead lights, recessed lighting, lamps and more.

As far as lamps making a fashion statement, they should complement the style of your décor, either blending into the background or adding a distinctive touch that stands out.

Lamps can be simple or ornate, masculine or feminine, traditional or modern. And there are so many choices in shape, size, color, material and shade style.

Think about adding lamps to create both a fashion statement and additional lighting: –

  • Next to a sofa, easy chair or stool –
  • On a nightstand or dresser –
  • Adorning a dining room sideboard –
  • Atop an entry hall console table –
  • On or near a desk in a home office –
  • Up on the fireplace mantel –
  • Even on the vanity in a powder roomlamps-and-lighting4

To add a sense of symmetry, use a pair of lamps on a buffet table, nightstands, or side tables on either side of a sofa. You can create informal symmetry by placing a table lamp on one side of a sofa or bed, and a floor lamp on the other. Focus on lamps this fall to create more intimate and engaging rooms.

Holiday decorating can help make the season more special.

Holiday decorating can help make the season more special.

holidaydecorating1

Holiday decorating will help get you and your guests into the spirit of the season, but keep it simple so YOU can enjoy the season without stressing about perfection.holidaydecorating2

There are so many ways you can decorate your home for the holidays, from the smallest candles and accessories to large-scale trees, wreaths and statuary. Typical areas of your home to prioritize for decorating include your living room or great room, dining room table and sideboard, fireplace mantle, front door and outside the house.

Start with a thorough house cleaning and put away other decorative accessories in your home, especially those on tabletops, mantles and furniture. This disciplined step will ensure you have a clean start for holiday trimmings that really pop!

holidaydecorating3 Once you put away extraneous accessories, you may recognize that you need more than just holiday decorating; it could be time to update carpeting, paint, furniture or window treatments, too! Plan your holiday décor for all the senses – to create a festive look, feel and smell. Think about decorations that can create new family traditions and that make you feel good.

This year, consider a new entertaining concept – maybe the first party of the season held before Thanksgiving or the

holidaydecorating4last party of the season a few days after New Years. Red, green, gold, silver, blue and white are traditional holiday colors. Also think outside the box for a refreshing new look with:

  • Transparent glass and earth tones
  • Fuchsia and lime
  • Light pink and forest green
  • Even black and white!

Make your home feel festive and bright this special season with a focus on holiday decorating. For more ideas or for help with your next design project, please contact the team at Delux Drapery & Shade Co.
