Vintage finds and antiques add depth and personality to your décor.

Have you inherited an antique from a favorite relative or purchased a vintage piece from a local flea market or on a foreign vacation? Not sure how to integrate it into your home design? Don’t despair.

Antiques and vintage items can be added to most any decorating style beautifully – and you’ll be saving a family heirloom or preserving a special memory. The surprise influence of an antique adds depth to a room and helps make the décor more interesting.

Here are some tips about incorporating antiques into your decorating plan:

  • Adding just a few antique items will make a room feel layered and personal.
  • Adding too many pieces can make your room look chaotic or junky or even like a museum, instead of a home!
  • Collections of vintage objects can make a beautiful art display, on walls, shelves, tables or in specially designed cases.

Think about using antique items for a different purpose or putting them in an unexpected place:

  • A vintage mirror can be hung in almost any room.
  • A vase can be repurposed as a beautiful lamp.
  • A large serving dish can be made into a planter.
  • A buffet table can be used as a bedroom dresser.
  • A couple of dining chairs can be moved into the bedroom to create a reading nook.vintage-and-antiques5A bedroom bureau can be repurposed as a beautiful entry room anchor piece.

Pantone Color of the Year- Greenery!

20 Jan

What is the PANTONE Color of the Year?pantonegreenery1

A symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.  This year’s selection: Greenery.

Greenery is a brighter shade of green with a hint of yellow.  It evokes the feeling of pantonegreenery7spring and the invigorating spirit it brings.  It’s the color we see the most in nature, so Pantone calls it “Nature’s Neutral”.  Like accent colors in the forest, it pairs well with so many palettes, you will be able to put this to good use immediately. Greenery reminds of words that make things anew: refresh, revive, restore, renew, replenish, regenerate, rejuvenate, reinvigorate, re-oxygenate. Design is an outlet for all of these fresh beginnings.  And the yellow pigment in Greenery references the sun, the symbolic light that people need in these times.  Perhaps that is why it feels like a life affirming color.  Time to reconnect with nature and disconnect from technology.

Green Building

pantonegreenery2Green building has been on the rise for years.  There are many ways to build new and renovate adhering to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines for what is considered a green build.  It can be as apparent as foliage on the exterior, like the office building in downtown Tokyo, pictured right.

It can also be about the materials, lighting, plumbing, electricity, etc., like the University of Michigan Law School pictured below, which was granted Gold Certification for its efforts.

It is clepantonegreenery3ar that building green is here to stay and Greenery is a representation of that.

Vibrant for year round inclusion or “trans-seasonal”.  When paired with 2016’s Rose Quartz and Serenity, they become part of the Transitions palette.

pantonegreenery5It works with all of the neutrals; black, brown, tan, grey, and taupe so it will be easy to throw it in as an accent if you don’t want to center your look on Greenery.

And you can always start the natural way and add a few plants to get your green on!

Modern Art Adds a Focal Point and Conversational Interest

11 Jan

Modern art adds a focal point and conversational interest.

modernart2Art in any style is a welcome enhancement to a home. In addition to adding beauty, a piece of modern art can create drama, interest and emotion in a room. The colors, shapes, brushstrokes and composition evoke a feeling, with their movement, energy and form.

Often people add art as the finishing touch to a room. Another very effective design strategy is to start and color around it.

Modern art can be created in any medium, in most any size and shape. It can be calming or energizing, monochromatic or brimming with color.modernart3
When we think about art for our homes, we tend to think about wall art – flat art painted with watercolors, oil paint or acrylics, and most often we hang art on a wall above the sofa or fireplace. There’s so much more to modern art, including sculpture, collage, found objects, ceramics, and glass.
The most prominent piece of modern art in a room can be something we don’t even think of as art – such as a sculptural chair, a dramatic rug, a striking chandelier or an unusual coffee table.

modernart4Focus your rooms with a piece of modern art this season. It will reflect your personality and pull a room together beautifully.
