Decorating with Leather Furnishings

13 Jun

Leather adds texture and color.

Consider a touch of leather in your next decorating project. Leather adds great texture and color to a room, and most leather design elements are practical, too!

Beware though that leather can create a heavy look, especially in its most typical design colors, dark brown and black.

That’s why it’s best to balance dark pieces of leather furniture with design elements such as light paint colors and rugs, cushy throws and pillows, and soft fabric furniture and window fashions.

Combine leather with complementary materials.

Another way to lessen the heaviness of leather design elements is to select a lighter color, such as beige, white, gray or sage green. Or you can add a tidbit of brightness with green, red or yellow leather!

Complementary materials and textures can also lighten up leather furnishings. Think:

  • Plush rugs
  • Glass or Lucite tables
  • Metal chairs and lamps
  • Light filtering, soft-looking window fashions
  • Wood or bamboo flooring
  • Natural grass wall coverings
Leather furnishings are versatile and practical.

Leather adds beauty to most any decorating style, from a traditional dining room to a classic living room to an urban-contemporary great room.

Think about leather for these design elements:

  • Leather sofas and easy chairs, and even recliners!
  • Leather dining chairs
  • Leather headboard
  • Leather-fronted sideboard in the dining room or dresser in the bedroom
  • Leather-covered walls in a powder room or home office

Make a decorating statement in your next design project and add leather!

Decorating With Curves

10 Jan

Soften your interior design with curves.

Most home interiors have lots of straight lines and square – or almost square – corners. Hint: consider the shape of your tables, countertops, chairs, artwork, rugs and more.

Instead, why not think outside the box and add some curved design elements to your interior design plan?

Straight edges make a room seem clean and organized, but mixing in some curved contours can take away a feeling of austerity.

Consider all rounded shapes, such as circles, ovals, arcs, bows, ellipses, half moons and even helixes and amoeba profiles. These softer shapes will add a sense of flexibility, grace, joyfulness, and luxury to your home. And they add a natural, organic feel since many elements in nature have rounded edges.

Research even shows that we appreciate the look of curved surfaces. According to fastcodesign.com, people are far more likely to call a room beautiful when its design is round instead of square. Apparently, it’s hard-wired into our brains! And part of the reason we prefer curves is because they signal a feeling of safety.

Many elements in your home lend themselves to curved edges, including:

  • Tables
  • Sofas and ottomans
  • Chairs
  • Mirrors and other wall art
  • Rugs
  • Tile patterns
  • Outdoor decks, porches and walkways
  • Stenciled patterns on walls and ceilings
  • Even curved walls, vaulted ceilings, and arched doorways

Take a swerve this season and add some curved design elements to your home. For more ideas and help with your next design project, contact us here at Delux Drapery & Shade Co.

Relaxed furniture can help you slow down and unwind

15 Mar

Relaxed furniture can help you slow down and unwind.

Home is where relaxation should be key, especially since most of us live busier lives than ever before. Designing your home for maximum relaxation is a great strategy to help you find peace and calm when you enter your home environment.

  • Focus on purchasing pieces of furniture – especially your upholstered sofas and chairs – that help you create a soft and gentle living space:
  • Less structured
  • More rounded edges than square corners
  • Well cushioned
  • Soft, sensuous fabrics
  • Comfortable construction
  • No-fuss, informal slip covers

Finish off your relaxed furniture with other home elements that can help you feel more relaxed including:

  • Soft lighting
  • Calming paint colors
  • Natural materials and colors
  • Puffy throw pillows
  • Silky rugs (maybe even a shaggy rug or faux fur rug!)
  • Soothing scents created by candles and fresh flowers
  • Translucent window fashions

In the bedroom, soften your bed with an upholstered headboard. Add a sumptuous duvet, lots of comfortable pillows and lighting that can be dimmed.

Adding relaxed furniture and accessories can help you feel calm and rested – and actually make you feel more at home in your home. For more ideas or for help with your next design project, please contact the team at Delux Drapery & Shade Co..

Lounge Chairs Are Comfortable Seating Choices You Can Lean Into

21 Dec

Lounge chairs are comfortable seating choices you can lean into.

If you think lounge chairs are a thing of the past, think again! They are new again and come in so many up-to-date loungechairs3styles, materials and colors. And who can imagine a more comfortable addition to your living room or great room?

Lounge, sprawl, and stretch out. There are so many reasons to add a relaxing chair for comfy living: Give yourself a needed break and take time to watch TV, read a book, look out at a beautiful view or listen to music.

loungechairs2Big, dark brown, battered leather is the stereotype image for a lounge chair, but there’s so much more. Today’s chairs can be more petite, with wingback or modern sleek designs or shaped more like chaise lounges.

Lounge chairs come in loads of fabrics, including prints and light colors. Some have wood or chrome detailing, some come with welting, nail heads or tufting, and some have a swivel or rocker feature.

Things to consider:

  • Plan your chair’s placement so there’s plenty of room for movement around it.loungechairs4
  • Place a table nearby for snacks and beverages.
  • Add a lamp if you plan to read while lounging.
  • Make sure the lounge chair is the appropriate size for the room. If your other furniture is small, select a chair that complements this scale.

Add a lounge chair for a new tilt on seating in your home. Then lie back and relax!

Masculine Style In Honor of Father’s Day

16 Jun

In honor of Father’s Day, we thought we’d choose a subject fathers can relate to, which is masculine interior design. Masculine1But for the non-fathers, and non-males out there, we got you covered too. Even though masculine style in interior design is mostly associated with males, it’s definitely not exclusive to them (sorry, guys!); Masculine style can be used in any home, whether it be a bachelor pad, family home, or even singles crib.masculine4
Everyone thinks choosing to go with a masculine style for a space means staying away from anything fashionable or festive. Which is not entirely true, because it can definitely be elegant and classy. All it takes is just a little research and thinking outside the box. Continue reading

5 Accent Chairs to Consider

Want to set off your room with something special? Sometimes all it takes is an accent piece to fill that void. Here is a list of 5 accent chairs to choose from to fit your style and space.

Accent Chair1
THE CLUB CRUCIAL ELEMENTS: An upholstered, roomy armchair with extra-deep seats, perfect for curling up with a book. WHERE TO USE: In pairs making up a cozy nook or as the ideal companion alongside a living room sofa. MOST LIKELY TO: Have leather upholstery or nail-head trim (or both).

Accent Chair2THE SLIPPER CRUCIAL ELEMENTS: Armless and upholstered with a petite silhouette and a seat that’s likely closer to the ground than you’re used to. WHERE TO USE: Near the coffee table, in a small apartment or at the end of your bed. If space is a scarce resource around your home, a slipper is a great option. MOST LIKELY TO: Be the choice seating for petite people. Sometimes simple and solid but, quite often, big and bold prints are seen.Accent Chair3

THE OCCASIONAL CRUCIAL ELEMENTS: The main focus of this chair, which can have numerous shapes and sizes, is that it is easy to move when needed. Most are armless as well and are put in place whenever the “occasion” arises. WHERE TO USE: This chair can be used anywhere and everywhere. MOST LIKELY TO: Have a special shape or fabric/print that draws attention when brought out.

Accent Chair4

THE WINGBACK CRUCIAL ELEMENTS: Easy to spot with its winged sides and tall back. WHERE TO USE: Fantastic option to offset a large sofa to balance out the room. Also frequently put by the fireplace. And sometimes unexpectedly, you can surprise guests by using them as end chairs at the dining room table to give a statelier look. MOST LIKELY TO: Stay where it always is. It is part of the everyday décor and never moved. Quite often may have a matching ottoman or pillow.Accent Chair5

THE BERGERE CRUCIAL ELEMENTS: Regal lines, exposed wood and an upholstered seat and  back make up this chair. WHERE TO USE: Found in pairs across from a sofa or possibly in a bedroom with an ottoman in between. MOST LIKELY TO: Have a loose seat cushion to keep the space casual.
