Headboards As a Decorating Option

7 Jun

A beautiful headboard adds instant style to your bedroom.

Making your bedroom a calming oasis has many aspects. The most important design element is the bed, and often the most noticeable thing about your bed is the headboard! That’s why it’s smart to focus on a headboard – and possibly a complementary footboard – when you design your bedroom look.

A headboard can command attention and add beauty or it can be so subtle that it almost disappears into the background. The choice is yours. Headboards (and footboards) come in many different materials, sizes and styles. Plan your headboard to complement the rest of the furniture in the room.

Think about the size of your bedroom to make sure your headboard is the right scale. A large or tall room will need a substantial headboard, while a small room needs a headboard in a smaller size.

Headboards can be made from many materials or a combination, including wood, leather, iron, brass and bronze.

Upholstered headboards are quite popular today, and can be designed to look tailored and modern, with sharp, square corners, or feminine and soft with rounded shapes.
You might decide not to even have a headboard. Instead you can embellish the wall behind your bed with artwork, shelves, a hanging tapestry or patterned wallpaper.

Or think about using lots and lots of pillows standing upright on your bed as a substitute for a headboard.

Add a beautiful backdrop to your bed this season! It will add instant style to your bedroom. For more ideas or help with your next design project, contact the team at Delux Drapery & Shade Co..

Plush Bedding Is So Enjoyable!

22 Jul

Plush bedding is one of the most enjoyable investments you can make in your home.

It’s an enhancement you’ll appreciate every night.
Where do you spend more hours each day than in your bed? Why not dial up the luxury and sinkplush bedding1
into a comforting haven each night when you go to sleep?
Making over your bed linens is one of the easiest and most reasonably priced enhancements you can make to your home. It will make you feel pampered every day and every night.
The look and feel of the fabrics. You can choose among many design schemes when selecting bedding, including sophisticated, elegant, feminine, masculine, zen or whimsical, but whatever the look, comfort is always key.

ShowcaseHome1Make sure the fabrics you select feel good on your skin. Soft choices for sheets and pillows include high-thread-count cotton, smooth silk and toasty flannel.
The colors. Some people like their bedroom linens to have the soothing look of neutrals without pattern, while others like the energy of bolder colors and patterns. It’s your choice. Popular patterns include floral, geometric, stripes, medallions, seaside prints, paisley, or even a patchwork quilt for a cozy look. You can also add interest by using solid color bedding with borders in a different color or gentle pattern.

The pillows. Have you noticed that “more is better” is the strategy with bed pillows these days? First you have the pillows you actually lay your head on to sleep. Then you can add complementary shams and, on top of those, decorative pillows in a variety of colors, patterns, shapes and sizes.

Sink into soft, luxurious bedding every evening when you go to bed, and you’ll wake up in a better mood. Invest in new bedding for pure enjoyment!

Your Bed Is The Design Anchor Of Your Bedroom.

15 Jul

Your bed is the design anchor of your bedroom.

Select a headboard or bed frame that adds beauty and commands attention.
In the bedroom, it’s all about the bed. Make it the centerpiece of your boudoir and the first thing people notice when they walk in.Headboard1
Beds can be made from so many materials, including wood, upholstery, brass, bronze, iron or leather – or a combination of these materials, such as a wood headboard frame with an upholstered insert or a wooden canopy bed with softly draped fabric. Some headboards even include built-in shelves above the bed or built-in nightstands at each side.Headboard3

Beds come in so many shapes and sizes. They should be the right scale for the room, with larger rooms requiring taller or more substantial beds to add drama. In general, a headboard with sharp square corners will look more tailored and modern, while a cut-out or rounded shape will look more feminine and soft. The bed should also complement the other furniture and fabrics in a room. For more interest, add tufting or nailheads to upholstered headboards and think about painting the wall behind the bed in a dramatic accent color.
If you don’t have a headboard, your bedroom may look like something is missing. However, you can fill out the space above your bed with artwork, shelves, a hanging tapestry or a Japanese fan – or display lots of pillows standing upright on the bed.

Make your bed the star of your bedroom by focusing on the design of the bedframe or headboard in your decorating plans. Then your next decorating project can include all the other beautiful elements in a bedroom, including linens, furniture, rugs and window fashions!

Custom Furniture or Off The Showroom Floor?

Showroom Showdown: Custom Furniture vs. Store Bought

Today you’ll discover why you should be looking at custom furniture instead of store bought. When you work in the design field, it’s fun to go shopping for special items for the home. It’s also easy for us to know when to invest our money. For most consumers out there, this is not so. Custom furniture is often labeled as too expensive when really, for something being used everyday it should be exactly what you need and worth the cost of quality. Before you rule out custom, consider the following:Child's Pink sofa upholstery

  • Functionality/Spatial Needs– How many times have you gotten a sofa home to discover it doesn’t quite fit the way you want it to? Or what if you have an odd amount of space allotted for your desk? You will search endlessly if you only look at what is mass produced. Choosing something custom allows you to determine your needs and what you have to work with so that your furniture helps, not hinders, the functionality of your space.
  • custom sofaStyle/One of a Kind– Custom furniture is a conversation piece! You will have a unique piece that no one else has. And maybe you’re not into the colors and prints you see in the stores. You will get the opportunity to put your personality into your furniture instead of trying to fit in a box with the current trends.
  • Price/Quality– More often than not, custom furniture isn’t more expensive than store bought. There’s a lot of overhead that goes into mass produced furniture for retail chains. And in this instance, the craftsmanship definitely beats out the assembly line. Artisans take pride in their work and strive to make quality products. After all, they want return customers too.michael-thomas chair
  • Made in America– Last but not least, your custom piece is probably made here in America. North Carolina is widely known as the furniture capital and is home to MT Company-a company that has many ways to customize your furniture.

Why Choose Wallpaper Over Paint?

11 Mar

Why Choose Wallpaper Over Paint?

Did you know that Play-Doh was originally used as a wallpaper cleaner?   In 1933, wallpaper cleaner was a hot commodity as, at the time, coal was the leading way to heat one’s home, being much more efficient and cheaper than wood. This had the negative side effect of leaving soot everywhere, which was difficult WallpaperVSPaint1to clean off of wallpaper as you couldn’t get it wet.

It’s probably not something you think about a whole lot, but wallpaper has been around for a long time. Some of the earliest techniques for it date back before 1700. The design industry hears complaints about wallpaper frequently: wallpaper is outdated; it’s difficult to apply; it’s only for traditional homes; it’s hard to clean. But we are here to tell you that it is anything but outdated and you should consider wallpaper instead of paint in the future for these reasons:

Durability-Wallpaper is great for high traffic areas and can last for years. There are
many different kinds varying from vinyl to grasscloth so that you can choose one best suited for each room. It used to be you wouldn’t wallpaper a kitchen or bathroom because of the adhesive and high humidity. But now you can get vinyl wallpaper that is easy to scrub. It’s also easier to remove than former kinds of wallpaper.

Quick Prep Work-There is little that needs to be done to a wall to get it ready for wallpapering. No spackling has to be done. You can prime beforehand which helps the paper stick to the wall instead of fighting a glossy finish paint, but aside from that you can just put it up. It will hide wall imperfections that paint won’t hide.

WallpaperVSPaint5Design Individuality-Create a unique space for you. You can paper a whole room of course, but also think about using wallpapering as an accent. Wallpaper just one wall as a focal point and then you can either paint the rest of the space or choose a coordinating wallpaper.

Modern Prints and Textures-This isn’t your grandma’s wallpaper. There are thousands of wallpaper options for the modern and contemporary homes out there, including grasscloth and cork.

Mustard Is Not Just For Sandwiches!

28 Jan

Mustard is not just for sandwiches.mustardColor2
It’s a warm, rich interior design color that adds tang to your home environment.
Mustard as an interior design color has a very similar role as mustard on a sandwich. Just a dollop adds a lot of flavor and pizazz, but too much can spoil the sandwich! If you don’t like the mental image of a sandwich condiment in your home décor, you can also call this vibrant hue goldenrod or egg yolk.
Mustard is a rich and warm color – and just a little bit daring! It goes well with black and white or with brown and white; and is very sophisticated when used with a gray and white color palette. Other accent colors that play well with mustard include deep reds, navy blue and lighter blue tones.
MustardColor1Because mustard is bold and dramatic, it’s best to use it in small quantities as an accent and not as a primary design color. It’s especially effective to use mustard in the kitchen to add brightness or in a powder room to add drama. Consider these design elements to get your mustard fix:
 A piece of painted furniture or the fabric on an upholstered piece of furniture
 A picture frame or artwork featuring mustardmustardColor3
 Rugs and throw pillows
 An accent wall
 Window fashions and wall coverings
 Linens on the dining room table, atop the bed or in the powder room
 Lamps
 Flowers and plants with mustard blooms
 Even your front door!
Think outside the refrigerator this season and use mustard to space up your decor!

Ottomans add flexibility, function and beauty to almost any room

17 Dec

Ottomans add flexibility, function and beauty to almost any room.
Make an ottoman a focal point of a room or use it as a design element that perfectly complements your other home fashions.
Have you ever thought, “I ought to get an ottoman?” That’s a great idea! Ottomans are not just for putting up your tired legs at the end of a long day, although that’s the traditional use.

There’s so much more that ottomans can do in living rooms, home offices, dens or bedrooms:

ottoman3

    • Hold a tray of drinks and appetizers or coffee and cookies
    • Add extra seating
    • Provide a place for an open suitcase in the guestroom
    • Make a spot to sit at the foot of the bed to put on shoes and socks

Ottomans are so flexible. You can move them around as needed, or push them against a wall or under a table to get them out of the way if you need more space to move around the room.
And ottomans come in such a variety of shapes, sizes, fabrics and styles. Think outside the square or rectangle with an oval or round ottoman. Use fabric that matches your other upholstered furniture or bedding – or select contrasting fabric in an unexpected color or bold print to add an interesting accent. You can even drape a throw, scarf or pashmina over an ottoman to create a design focal point. Worried about dirt from people’s feet or beverage spills? Think about slipcovering your ottoman in washable fabric.

Adding an ottoman to your décor gives you flexibility, function and beauty. And you’ll have fun thinking of all the ways you can use it!

Ten Things To Consider Before You Schedule A Designer

3 Mar

If you are considering working with a designer or decorator for window treatments,  think about what you would like to achieve with your new window treatments.  We like to be helpful in getting just the right treatment for the right situation and have found it helps to eliminate confusion from all the options and possibilities that exist.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • Have you noticed sun damage on your furniture, carpeting, rugs or flooring?
  • Would you like to cut down on the ultraviolet rays from the sun, but yet see out of your windows?
  • Does the sun create too much heat in one or more of your rooms?
  • Do you need to cut the glare from the sun on your television or computer screen?
  • Is privacy a concern for you?
  • Do you loose heat through your windows?
  • Would you like to soften the lines of your windows with draperies or valances?
  • Have you considered what style and color of drapery or valance you would like? If not, we are happy to help you with pictures and sketches.
  • Have you thought of incorporating decorative hardware?
  • Do you have a budget, and are you willing to share it with your designer?

These are answers that will help your designer narrow choices to what is best suited for your and your needs. Sharing your budget is so important because it helps your designer find the right product from the beginning of the project. It’s good to know if you need a treatment for privacy, or just to help with energy efficiency.

Using Crystal and Glass In Your Home

18 Nov

It’s clear that glass and crystal will make your home environment sparkle.

Your house will shine with just a touch of glass. Glass is a clean, fresh look that adds interest, without too much bling or glitter. Glass

The interesting thing about glass is that it almost disappears into a room to make the room seem more spacious and open, while it adds a beautiful design element that people do notice. Because light shines through most glass interior elements or light reflects back from light fixtures and the sun, glass home furnishings appear almost invisible and don’t seem to take up space. You can see your other interior design elements even more clearly; just think about a glass table sitting atop a beautiful rug. You can see the beauty of the rug much more clearly!

Chic and modern or traditional and elegant, glass works well in almost any space. And even though we think of glass as a clear element, lots of glass home fashions come in beautiful colors too.

Glass2

In addition to popular glass-topped coffee tables or dining tables, think glass for:

  • Mosaic tiles in the guest bathroom or as a backsplash in the kitchen
  • Crystal chandeliers and glass lamps
  • Stained glass windows
  • Hurricane lanterns
  • Sea glass sculptures
  • Large glass jars or bottles to display treasures such as sea shells, pine cones, stones or fragrant potpourri
  • Glass countertops in the kitchen or bath – or a beautiful glass sink in the guest bathroom

Add a smattering of glass to your interior décor to make your house sparkle and appear larger. It’s a crystal clear choice.
