Decorating with Stripes

13 Mar

Stripes1

Stripes are versatile

Adding stripes to your décor is the perfect finishing touch – very similar to adding Stripes2beautiful ribbons to your gift packages! Stripes complete and dress up almost any decorating plan.

Stripes are a versatile design element and go well with most any décor, including contemporary, traditional, Victorian, transitional, shabby chic and mid-century. It all depends on the striped elements you select and how you use them.

Stripes add order to a room

Stripes3Stripes can liven a room and make it look crisp and organized. Traditional vertical stripes make a room appear taller, while horizontal stripes can make a room appear larger. If you’re bold, you can even go diagonal!

Stripes can be wide or narrow – or not the same width throughout. They can have clean edges or be jagged and funky. Stripes can even be made out of various objects, such as small flowers or geometric shapes. Straight-edged stripes are a good place to start if you’re afraid of the busyness of patterns.

Where to use stripes

If you’re nervous about adding any patterns to your décor, gain confidence by starting Stripes4small with stripes: Add elements such as striped bed linens, throw pillows, lampshades, vases or rugs.

If you feel bolder, think about trying stripes in upholstery furniture, wall coverings, carpeting, window treatments and more.

Create a new pattern in your life this season by adding stripes to your home décor.

Take Your Décor To New Heights

20 Feb

Ceilings1

Most of the time, we think about ceilings as just a blank place at the top of our walls. Instead, think of ceilings as a fifth wall that can be enhanced to add character and beauty or make your rooms seem more spacious.

Some changes involve major structural renovations, such as:Ceilings2
– Warm wood beams
– Rustic wood slats
– Vaulted ceilings
– Raising the roof to add a row of windows
– Cutting through the roof to install skylights

For these dramatic changes, you’ll need to hire a contractor (and maybe even an engineer) to advise you and do the work, keeping in mind structural issues in your home.

Other ceiling enhancements are easier to complete such as:Ceilings3
– Crown molding on or near the ceiling
– Coffered ceilings
– Coved ceilings
– Hollow beams that don’t add weight to your home’s structure
– Contrasting paint color, either darker or lighter than wall paint
– Stencils or murals
– Faux paint finishes

Take your home environment to a higher level – and don’t forget about the ceilings!

Transform Your Home With Texture

13 Feb

Adding Texture1

Adding Texture2The look of your interior design is mostly about the sense of sight, maximizing the visual beauty of your home. But adding texture to the equation brings in the sense of touch.
Having a variety of textures in a room adds interest and emotion, provides balance, and may enhance your physical comfort for sitting and lounging.
A room without much texture can be quietly beautiful, communicating sleekness and calm, but it can also become a bit monotonous.

Texture adds a tactile sense to your interior design and wakes up the room. Soft and silky finishes can relax your senses, while rougher textures will energize you. Adding Texture3

Think of these contrasts when selecting finishes for a room:

  • Thick and thin
  • Soft and hard
  • Bumpy and smooth
  • Silky and rough
  • Flexible and stiff

Ideas for adding texture are:

  • A natural contoured edge for a wood table or counter top
  • Textured woven wood shades
  • Natural furniture made of rattan or wickerAdding Texture4
  • Rugged fabrics such as tweed, tapestry and some wools
  • Ridges or embossed patterns in wall coverings
  • Distressed or faux paint and stain finishes
  • Knotty or unfinished wood
  • Shaggy or contoured carpeting and rugs
  • Tufted upholstery or even ruffles
  • Rough finishes on stone floors or backsplashes
Add tactile texture to your interior plan! It will transform the feeling of your home.

Operating Systems for Custom Hunter Douglas Blinds

16 Jan

Operating Systems for Custom Blinds

With the number of styles and materials available, you are sure to find blinds to fit every window or glass door in your home. To take advantage of the flexibility of light control and privacy that comes with custom horizontal or vertical blinds, select the operating system that is best for you.

Operating Systems for Vertical Blinds

Chain and cord – This is the standard operating system for custom vertical blinds from Hunter Douglas. The cord opens and closes the entire blind and the chain rotates the vanes up to 180 degrees.combination-wand-cord-video-thumb

Wands – There are two different systems that use wands to control vertical blinds. PermaTilt® has a cord within a wand, keeping the cord out of reach for small wand-control-video-thumbchildren. The cord is used to open and close the blind and the wand rotates the vanes. The PermAssure® wand both opens and closes and rotates the vanes, eliminating the need for cords or chains completely.

powerview-motorization-video-card-card_0Motorized – Motorized vertical blinds may seem like an unnecessary luxury or gimmick, but they are actually very practical. PowerView motorization allows you to program a remote, mobile device, or whole house automation system to adjust your blinds at the touch of a button, or even according to a set schedule. This can increase the energy-efficiency and safety of your home and make it possible to adjust window treatments that are otherwise out of reach.

Operating Systems for Custom Horizontal Blinds

Cords – As with vertical blinds, cords are the standard operating system for horizontal blinds as well. One set of cords is used to raise and lower the blinds and other is used to tilt the slats. If long cords are a concern, cord cleats can be installed to hold cords neatly and keep them out of reach.

UltraGlide® – This system eliminates extra-long cords that can become tangled with a retractable cord that stays the same length, regardless of how your custom blind is positioned.

literise-video-thumbCordless – If you prefer no cords at all, LiteRise® and SimpleLift® are completely cordless. The horizontal blind is raised and lowered by pulling or pushing on the bottom of the blind.

Motorized – There are a couple motorized operating systems that allow you to adjust your horizontal blinds without leaving your seat. Just as its name implies, PowerTilt® gives you the power to tilt the slats on your custom blinds with a remote control. If you want complete control at your fingertips, PowerView technology lets you set different window treatment settings throughout the day and adjust numerous blinds at the same time with a remote or mobile device.

For three generations, Delux Drapery & Shade Co. has been helping satisfied customers create custom window fashions for their homes with in-home consultations, precise window measuring, thousands of choices, and professional installation. We are located in Ann Arbor, Michigan and service Ypsilanti, Saline, Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester, Howell, Brighton, all of Washtenaw County, and all surrounding communities.

Whimsical Décor

21 Nov

Whimsical Decor1

Be brave and add a bit of whimsy to your décor

What is whimsy? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as the quality or state of Whimsical Decor2being whimsical or fanciful. Other words we can use to define whimsy in an interior design plan include quirky, funky, playful, unusual, or unexpected.

Adding a touch of whimsy to your home décor requires a bit of courage and confidence; however, it ensures that your house isn’t a “vanilla” interior like everyone else’s. It also takes some imagination, which is what really Whimsical Decor3adds your unique personality to the look of your home.

Whimsy works best in interior design when used in small quantities and in a surprising way. If you use too much, your home could look like a carnival fun house.

The whimsical element can stand out from among the rest of the furnishings because it is different in shape, style, color, design or scale – or is just totally unexpected!

Design elements that work well for adding a bit of whimsy include: Whimsical Decor4
– Unusually patterned or textured window treatments, rugs or carpeting
– Wall art or sculpture
– Unusually shaped or colored furniture
– Unexpected wallpaper
– Stencils or murals on the wall, ceiling or floor
– Surprising fabric on a chair or sofa (or slipcovers if you want to make a smaller commitment!)
– Decorative accessories such as throw pillows, bed linens or table linens
– Display of a collection that is unusual; for example, kitschy souvenirs or unusual photos

Be adventuresome this fall and have some fun by adding whimsy!

Beautiful Area Rugs

7 Nov

Area Rugs1

Add warmth and beauty with an area rug

Area Rugs2Even though rugs are a design element that we walk all over, they are an important part of your interior environment and a perfect addition to create warmth, definition, and beauty in a room.

Rugs make us feel good in so many ways – by making our feet happy as we move around the house and by adding a warm finishing touch that can be playful or sophisticated, modern or traditional.

Beautiful rugs are functional, too.

Area rugs also add function: They are an acoustical damper, keeping noise down from Area Rugs3heavy footsteps and children playing. They also work to square off functional areas of a room; for example, the conversational area of a room and the dining area.

When selecting a rug, take into account the floor under the rug, too. For example, add soft wool to hard wood, smooth silk to rough stone, or thick shag to flat tile.

Area rugs come in so many choices.

Consider the many choices of color, style, price and material when you select a rug, such as:
– Solid colorsArea Rugs4
– Abstract patterns
– Faux animal prints
– Ethnic looks
– Historic Oriental rug designs
– Traditional wool or silk
– Practical cotton or blends
– Avantgarde designs and materials
– Shaggy synthetic fibers

Step on it this season and add a new rug! It will add luxury and depth to your room.
