Decorating with Leather Furnishings

13 Jun

Leather adds texture and color.

Consider a touch of leather in your next decorating project. Leather adds great texture and color to a room, and most leather design elements are practical, too!

Beware though that leather can create a heavy look, especially in its most typical design colors, dark brown and black.

That’s why it’s best to balance dark pieces of leather furniture with design elements such as light paint colors and rugs, cushy throws and pillows, and soft fabric furniture and window fashions.

Combine leather with complementary materials.

Another way to lessen the heaviness of leather design elements is to select a lighter color, such as beige, white, gray or sage green. Or you can add a tidbit of brightness with green, red or yellow leather!

Complementary materials and textures can also lighten up leather furnishings. Think:

  • Plush rugs
  • Glass or Lucite tables
  • Metal chairs and lamps
  • Light filtering, soft-looking window fashions
  • Wood or bamboo flooring
  • Natural grass wall coverings
Leather furnishings are versatile and practical.

Leather adds beauty to most any decorating style, from a traditional dining room to a classic living room to an urban-contemporary great room.

Think about leather for these design elements:

  • Leather sofas and easy chairs, and even recliners!
  • Leather dining chairs
  • Leather headboard
  • Leather-fronted sideboard in the dining room or dresser in the bedroom
  • Leather-covered walls in a powder room or home office

Make a decorating statement in your next design project and add leather!

Display a Substantial Piece of Art

18 Apr
Art can be the starting point for your room design plan.

Start a room design with just one piece of extraordinary art. The art will transform your room and help you determine the rest of your décor, setting the color scheme and tying all your interior elements together. First, take time to figure out what kind of art you like, rather than purchasing what’s “in” at the time you’re decorating. Art is a long-term investment that you should love since you’ll live with it on your walls for quite awhile. Visit art galleries, local art shows and museums, and make a point to look at the artwork in your friends’ homes, noting what you think you’d like in your home, and what you wouldn’t.

Art adds personality and a point of engagement.

The art you select is very personal. It brings emotion and feeling into your home and lets people know something about you. Most often art is hung on a wall above the sofa or fireplace, but you can be creative about where art will look beautiful in your house. Art comes in many shapes and sizes that can adapt to almost any room, wall size and shape. Do think outside the box – and outside the frame! Not all art is hung on the wall. Sometimes a substantial piece of art might be a sculpture, dramatic rug, unusual chandelier or sculptural piece of furniture.

Adequate lighting is key to showcasing art.

Part of your art installation process should include the issue of lighting. Often track lighting or recess lighting works best to highlight your art. Focus on art as the first step next time you redecorate a room, and then plan your room around the art!

Decorate With Natural Wood

11 Apr

Add natural wood for a warm interior finish.

Wood is a staple in interior design. It’s ubiquitous in the home environment and warms up a room with color, texture, grain and a touch of nature. Sometimes wood interior features sit in the background, and sometimes they take the stage as the focal point of a room. With wood design elements, it’s often the overall impression that provides the beauty, as with wood floors or paneling. At other times, it’s the detailing that creates a stunning effect, as with intricately carved furniture and hand-crafted moldings.

It’s almost hard to imagine a room without wood!

As much as painted finishes, fabrics, leather, and stone add to an interior design plan, almost every room can benefit from a touch of beautiful wood, whether it’s rustic or highly finished, newly hewn or repurposed. Beautiful wood works in so many different design elements, including beams, moldings, floors, walls, doors, wainscoting, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, window coverings, and furniture. Smaller options for wood accents are clocks, lamps, mirror frames, picture frames, and headboards.

Place a focus on wood selection.

The most typical woods used in homes are oak, pine, walnut, mahogany and teak. More unusual wood species are olive wood, lemon wood, and mango. Today bamboo is popular for some home elements too because of its renewable nature, although technically bamboo is actually a grass and not a wood. Wood, wonderful wood. Include it in your next home design project for an enhanced interior look.

A Stunning Light Fixture Can Create A Big Impact

4 Apr
Light up your home by adding a chandelier.

Lighting is one of the most important elements in making your home environment function effectively and look beautiful. A new ceiling light fixture – or chandelier as they’re often called – can completely change the look of a room, making it a key element of your decorating plan. We think about ceiling light fixtures mostly for dining rooms, but they’re perfect for so many other rooms too, including the bedroom, living room, foyer, kitchen, bathroom, outdoor living spaces, and more.

A stunning light fixture can create a big impact in a room and, yet, it’s somewhat unique as a design element because it doesn’t take up any of your floor or wall space. It can actually reduce clutter while, at the same time, adding style! For optimal beauty and function, work with an expert to select light fixtures that are the right size and hang them at an appropriate height for your application.

Lighting strategies are quite different for dining rooms, living rooms, foyers, kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices. Lighting can work to set a soft, romantic mood, or to provide a spotlight in a specific area, or it can furnish an overall wash of brightness.

So do think about the quality of light that a fixture provides, including the number of bulbs, bulb wattage, color of bulbs and more. Dimmers are almost always a good idea since they give you options for brightness at various times of day or depending how you’re using the room at a given time. This spring, get the drop on beautiful room design with a new light fixture!

Accent Vases Can Be For More Than Just Flowers

28 Mar

Accent Vases Can Be For More Than Just Flowers

Often we think about vases solely as vessels to display fresh flowers – and it is nice to bring some of outdoor nature inside! But they are so much more. Some vases are beautiful just on their own. Or you can fill them with fresh leaves, bamboo, succulents, evergreens, dried branches, or silk flower arrangements. Vases come in just about any size, shape, color and material. A large floor vase can become a focal point for a room, while smaller vases can be the final touches that subtly finish off a room’s beauty.

Place vases…

  • In the living room or great room, to create a focal point
  • In the foyer, to make an opening statement for your home
  • Around the tub, to make your bathroom feel like a luxury spa retreat
  • On the mantle, to add dimension and symmetry to your architecture
  • In the dining room, to anchor your table beautifully
  • In the bedroom, to add interest to your bureau or chest of drawers

One of the best things about vases is you can easily change where they’re placed in a room and change what elements they hold to update a room for every season. Vases work alone or in groups of two or more, placed close together. They look great when paired with a chair, occasional table or work of art in a complementary style, shape, color or finish. Add a smart finishing touch to your interior design plan this season with beautiful vases.

Just One Mid-Century Chair Can Become The Centerpiece Of A Room.

9 Dec

This streamlined style from the 1950s and 1960s is new again!

Want a touch of the Mad Men era in your home? Just add one or two mid-century chairs!MidcenturyChair1

Mid-century design, also called mid-century modern, is more than 50 years old, yet it’s experiencing a renaissance today. That’s because this design style is timeless and distinctive. And although mid-century chairs add a modern touch, they go with most any other design style. They add a focal point to a room and are truly comfortable and functional.

MidcenturyChair2Mid-century chairs are characterized mostly by straight lines without ornamentation, and are often accented with a few graceful curves. Mid-century chairs combine expert craftsmanship with industrial design and manufacturing. They’re constructed from metal, wood, fiberglass, plastic and sometimes leather and fabric. They come in almost any color, but tend to be in black, white and tan. You can also go wild with 1960s colors such as harvest gold and avocado.

MidcenturyChair3

Purchase true vintage mid-century chairs at auction, local antique stores or online. You can also buy re-creations of classic mid-century pieces from many brick-and-mortar stores and showrooms.

You don’t have to change your decorating style to add a couple of mid-century chairs. Celebrate “less is more” with the beautiful lines and curves of a mid-century chair or two.

Mustard Is Not Just For Sandwiches!

28 Jan

Mustard is not just for sandwiches.mustardColor2
It’s a warm, rich interior design color that adds tang to your home environment.
Mustard as an interior design color has a very similar role as mustard on a sandwich. Just a dollop adds a lot of flavor and pizazz, but too much can spoil the sandwich! If you don’t like the mental image of a sandwich condiment in your home décor, you can also call this vibrant hue goldenrod or egg yolk.
Mustard is a rich and warm color – and just a little bit daring! It goes well with black and white or with brown and white; and is very sophisticated when used with a gray and white color palette. Other accent colors that play well with mustard include deep reds, navy blue and lighter blue tones.
MustardColor1Because mustard is bold and dramatic, it’s best to use it in small quantities as an accent and not as a primary design color. It’s especially effective to use mustard in the kitchen to add brightness or in a powder room to add drama. Consider these design elements to get your mustard fix:
 A piece of painted furniture or the fabric on an upholstered piece of furniture
 A picture frame or artwork featuring mustardmustardColor3
 Rugs and throw pillows
 An accent wall
 Window fashions and wall coverings
 Linens on the dining room table, atop the bed or in the powder room
 Lamps
 Flowers and plants with mustard blooms
 Even your front door!
Think outside the refrigerator this season and use mustard to space up your decor!
