Light Up Your Home With Mood-Inspiring Candles

17 Jan

Light up your home with mood-inspiring candles.

Warm up the mood in your living environment by adding candles to your décor. They’re perfect for the cold winter months and continue to add beauty all year long.

Candles add soft light to a room and create a sense of serenity. Best of all, they add atmosphere and romance. Candles come in most any shape, size and color – from small votive candles to large, tall candles that can sit on the floor and become a focal point of a room.

Candles add interest to almost any room and can be displayed in many places in a room, including on:

  • Dining tables
  • Mantles
  • Coffee tables and end tables
  • Bathroom counters and around the bathtub
  • Dressers and bureaus in the bedroom
  • Window sills
  • Shelves
  • The inside of your fireplace in summer

Candles look especially nice when mixed with flowers, books, lanterns, or seashells to create an artistic vignette. It’s fun to update candles for holidays, too.

Think about using candles in pairs or even larger groups, with candles of differing sizes and shapes.

Always make safety a priority when you decorate with candles. Make sure, candles are at a distance from anything that could be flammable and that they sit on a heat-resistant surface. And be vigilant about putting them out before you leave the house or go to bed. Or, use any of the many flame-less candles that are as beautiful as they are safe.

Lighten and brighten your home environment by adding beautiful candles this season. For more ideas and help with your next design project, contact us here at Delux Drapery & Shade Co.

5 Best Plants To Keep Your Indoor Air Clean

27 Dec

Now that it’s Winter, we are all indoors more often than not. We need to think about keeping our indoor air clean, which can be hard to do in colder climates.

According to NASA, there are several houseplants that are superstars at cleaning the air and putting oxygen back into your indoor atmosphere. Plants purify air, making them part of what NASA calls “nature’s life support system.”

There are five plants that are relatively easy to care for, do not need a lot of light or water and are the best air cleaners, according to the NASA study.

PeaceLily1. Peace Lily- a relatively easy plant. It will work in low light situations and needs very little water.

Chrysanthemum

2. Florist’s Chrysanthemum- usually associated with being outdoors in the garden, this plant is a work horse when it comes to cleaning indoor air.

These first two plants remove benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene as well as ammonia.

English Ivy3. English Ivy- again a plant that can thrive even if neglected.

Snake_plant

4. Snake Plant- also known as “mother-in-law tongue” because of its sharp edges, it can withstand low light and a bit of neglect. Just check its water once in a while, in winter it may only need water once every other month!

Red Edged Dracena

5. Red Edged Dracena- again can stand lower light levels, but may need to be fertilized a couple times a month during growing periods.

These last three remove all the toxins that the first two remove, except for the ammonia.

So whether you need to clean up the air in your home or your office, these are just five of the plants NASA recommends in helping prevent “sick building syndrome.”  There is a TED talk related to this clean air study that is really interesting.

Here’s to your health!

Decorating With Pillows

20 Dec

A few pillows can have a big impact on your décor.

Pillows seem like a small detail in a decorating scheme, yet they can add so much color, texture and personality to the look of your home. For maximum impact and decorating harmony, consider these attributes when you select decorative pillows:

  • Mix patterns if you’d like, but avoid more than two or three because the look may become chaotic.
  • Use complementary fabrics rather than the same material as your sofa.
  • Use colors that are compatible with the rest of your interior elements in the room, such as rugs, carpeting, window coverings and upholstery.
  • Layer different textures with multiple pillows, including smooth silk, soft velvet, rough tapestry and even fuzzy faux fur.
  • Think about embellishments on your pillows, such as embroidery, beading, tassels and fringe.
  • With pillows, size matters! And so does shape. In addition to square or rectangular pillows, consider unusual shapes, such as round, triangular, oblong and oval.
  • It’s almost always best to have more than one throw pillow on a sofa or bed. Two is most common, but you can also go with three or four.

Also think about comfort and your budget when you purchase pillows. Feathers and down stuffing feel soft and sensuous, but they tend to be more expensive and don’t hold a stiff shape. Synthetic fills and foam hold their shape better and are more reasonably priced. Selecting the perfect throw pillows for your rooms will puff up your home décor beautifully.

Spruce Up Your Fireplace

13 Dec

Spruce up your fireplace now and enjoy a warm, cozy experience all winter long.

A fireplace adds beauty to a home, in addition to adding emotional warmth and, yes, physical heat! With a little carefully planned TLC, your hearth can become the centerpiece of your home, no matter what the style of your house, from traditional to modern, and formal to casual.

Many elements create beauty in this area of your home, from the style and material of the fireplace and chimney to the design of the mantel and hearth, and even the décor and furniture near your fireplace.

Things to consider:

  • Choose from a variety of materials – stone, tile, cement, brick, paint and more.
  • For relaxing and warming up, place big comfortable chairs or low ottomans near the fireplace, or place giant floor pillows nearby.
  • For a unique look, purchase an antique wood or stone carved mantel and surround.
  • As an option, don’t have a mantle at all! A fireplace can look beautiful with the brick, wood or stone extending to the ceiling.

Hang a beautiful piece of art or a mirror over the fireplace – or position your flat screen TV here! Your TV can even be installed behind a remote-controlled piece of artwork.

  • For both function and beauty, add a unique fireplace screen and fireplace tools.
  • Highlight your fireplace in the summer months too, by adorning the inside or edges of your fireplace with live or artificial plants or a beautiful arrangement of candles.

Headboards As a Decorating Option

7 Jun

A beautiful headboard adds instant style to your bedroom.

Making your bedroom a calming oasis has many aspects. The most important design element is the bed, and often the most noticeable thing about your bed is the headboard! That’s why it’s smart to focus on a headboard – and possibly a complementary footboard – when you design your bedroom look.

A headboard can command attention and add beauty or it can be so subtle that it almost disappears into the background. The choice is yours. Headboards (and footboards) come in many different materials, sizes and styles. Plan your headboard to complement the rest of the furniture in the room.

Think about the size of your bedroom to make sure your headboard is the right scale. A large or tall room will need a substantial headboard, while a small room needs a headboard in a smaller size.

Headboards can be made from many materials or a combination, including wood, leather, iron, brass and bronze.

Upholstered headboards are quite popular today, and can be designed to look tailored and modern, with sharp, square corners, or feminine and soft with rounded shapes.
You might decide not to even have a headboard. Instead you can embellish the wall behind your bed with artwork, shelves, a hanging tapestry or patterned wallpaper.

Or think about using lots and lots of pillows standing upright on your bed as a substitute for a headboard.

Add a beautiful backdrop to your bed this season! It will add instant style to your bedroom. For more ideas or help with your next design project, contact the team at Delux Drapery & Shade Co..

How To Create A Beach House Look

12 Apr

How to create a beach house look.

Have you always wanted a beach house even though you don’t live anywhere near a body of water? Or maybe you already live near the water and want to make your home look more like a beach house?

Either way, you can create a relaxing, fun interior that looks like it belongs near the beach. Beach design colors can be vibrant and tropical, calm and neutral, or nautical blue and white. Even aqua and white or orange and white can create a beach feel. You can also use lots of beiges and light blues to reflect the colors of the sand and sky.

Here are some specific decorating ideas to create a beach house feel:

  • Choose pale-colored woods for floors, furniture or walls to reinforce a light and casual theme.
  • Rattan, wicker or bamboo furniture brings a beach vibe, as do rag rugs.
  • Driftwood can be displayed as an art object or used as a table base.
  • Look for furniture or storage units made from lobster traps or salvaged wood from boats or piers.
  • Purchase window fashions that let in lots of light, and use artificial lighting that’s bright and warm.

More ideas:

  • Add touches from the sea, such as coral and shells made into lamps, chandeliers, boxes and decorative items.
  • Install boat fittings in your kitchen or bath, such as hinges, lanterns and pulls.
  • Use fabrics, throws, pillows, table linens and bed linens with beach motifs, palm trees, surfers and boats.
  • Add artwork that depicts the sea, birds, fish or surfers.

You can even display a real boat in your house!! Or a model of a boat.

Sail into a new interior look with a beach theme. You’ll feel like you live by the shore every day. For more ideas or help with your next design project, contact the team at Delux Drapery & Shade Co..

Relaxed furniture can help you slow down and unwind

15 Mar

Relaxed furniture can help you slow down and unwind.

Home is where relaxation should be key, especially since most of us live busier lives than ever before. Designing your home for maximum relaxation is a great strategy to help you find peace and calm when you enter your home environment.

  • Focus on purchasing pieces of furniture – especially your upholstered sofas and chairs – that help you create a soft and gentle living space:
  • Less structured
  • More rounded edges than square corners
  • Well cushioned
  • Soft, sensuous fabrics
  • Comfortable construction
  • No-fuss, informal slip covers

Finish off your relaxed furniture with other home elements that can help you feel more relaxed including:

  • Soft lighting
  • Calming paint colors
  • Natural materials and colors
  • Puffy throw pillows
  • Silky rugs (maybe even a shaggy rug or faux fur rug!)
  • Soothing scents created by candles and fresh flowers
  • Translucent window fashions

In the bedroom, soften your bed with an upholstered headboard. Add a sumptuous duvet, lots of comfortable pillows and lighting that can be dimmed.

Adding relaxed furniture and accessories can help you feel calm and rested – and actually make you feel more at home in your home. For more ideas or for help with your next design project, please contact the team at Delux Drapery & Shade Co..

Lounge Chairs Are Comfortable Seating Choices You Can Lean Into

21 Dec

loungechairs1

Lounge chairs are comfortable seating choices you can lean into.

If you think lounge chairs are a thing of the past, think again! They are new again and come in so many up-to-date loungechairs3styles, materials and colors. And who can imagine a more comfortable addition to your living room or great room?

Lounge, sprawl, and stretch out. There are so many reasons to add a relaxing chair for comfy living: Give yourself a needed break and take time to watch TV, read a book, look out at a beautiful view or listen to music.

loungechairs2Big, dark brown, battered leather is the stereotype image for a lounge chair, but there’s so much more. Today’s chairs can be more petite, with wingback or modern sleek designs or shaped more like chaise lounges.

Lounge chairs come in loads of fabrics, including prints and light colors. Some have wood or chrome detailing, some come with welting, nail heads or tufting, and some have a swivel or rocker feature.

Things to consider:

  • Plan your chair’s placement so there’s plenty of room for movement around it.loungechairs4
  • Place a table nearby for snacks and beverages.
  • Add a lamp if you plan to read while lounging.
  • Make sure the lounge chair is the appropriate size for the room. If your other furniture is small, select a chair that complements this scale.

Add a lounge chair for a new tilt on seating in your home. Then lie back and relax!

A Casual Dining Spot Helps People Feel At Home.

8 Dec

casualdining1

Formal dining rooms are a fabulous part of a house and home. But just because you have a formal dining room, casualdining2doesn’t mean you can’t have a casual dining space, too. Why not create a flexible and beautiful spot for unplanned get-togethers and daily family time – from lounging in the morning with a cup of coffee to afternoon homework to late evening talks with a cup of tea? And when guests are invited, it’s nice for them to be close to the cooking action, enjoying a pre-dinner beverage and chatting with the chef!

A casual dining spot is usually in the kitchen or great room, but it can becasualdining3 somewhere else too, maybe even outdoors if you live in a year-round moderate climate! And it doesn’t have to be a stand-alone table and chairs, but instead can be a counter top with high stools or a built-in table with a banquette. Practicality is key when creating a casual dining spot.

You will want to plan for:

  • Washable surfaces
  • Comfortable seating
  • Flexibility to use the space for homework and as a buffet
  • Durable materials for chairs or stools, maybe even washable slip covers
  • Good lighting, since this area may be used for schoolwork or catching up on email
  • Open shelving nearby so family and guests can help set the table or hand the cook a serving dish or pot.

casualdining4A casual dining spot can come in most any decorating style. A contemporary look with mid-century furniture will give off a casual vibe, while a traditional or country look will feel comfortable and safe. Don’t worry about everything perfectly matching in style or material. Part of the charm of casual dining is its unpredictability. Think kid-friendly, family-friendly, and friend-friendly when designing a casual dining spot in your house. You and your loved ones will love the spontaneity this flexible space provides.

An Inviting Dining Room

21 Sep

diningroom1

An inviting dining room makes your guests feel welcome.

For a while, many people weren’t interested in a formal dining room and even converted their dining rooms into diningroom2libraries, billiard rooms or offices. Today the dining room is back! Many homeowners want to create a beautiful setting for dining with their family and friends. A dining room’s function is key, of course, but the dining room is about so much more than just eating a meal. It’s about the experience and the ambiance people feel when they dine in your home.
Your table is the anchor of your room, and the chairs are key. These are long-term investments that you’ll have forever, if you purchase high quality. And don’t forget a sideboard or china cabinet to store dishes, silverware and linens close at hand. Here are some tips to optimize your dining room:

  • Think about whether you need a table with leaves, if you plan to entertain a crowd.diningroom3
  • Make sure the chairs are comfortable and the right height for the table.
  • Use mirrors to make the room seem larger.
  • Change the look of your table with linens and table settings, and the look of your chairs with slipcovers.
  • Add interest to your walls with wallpaper, an accent painted wall or wainscoting.
  • Plan for beautiful lighting, including a chandelier, and even wall sconces or buffet lamps.
  • Add window coverings that provide both beauty and function, especially when the late afternoon sun is streaming in.
  • And, of course, decorate your dining room for the holidays for added cheer.
