How To Create A Beach House Look

12 Apr

How to create a beach house look.

Have you always wanted a beach house even though you don’t live anywhere near a body of water? Or maybe you already live near the water and want to make your home look more like a beach house?

Either way, you can create a relaxing, fun interior that looks like it belongs near the beach. Beach design colors can be vibrant and tropical, calm and neutral, or nautical blue and white. Even aqua and white or orange and white can create a beach feel. You can also use lots of beiges and light blues to reflect the colors of the sand and sky.

Here are some specific decorating ideas to create a beach house feel:

  • Choose pale-colored woods for floors, furniture or walls to reinforce a light and casual theme.
  • Rattan, wicker or bamboo furniture brings a beach vibe, as do rag rugs.
  • Driftwood can be displayed as an art object or used as a table base.
  • Look for furniture or storage units made from lobster traps or salvaged wood from boats or piers.
  • Purchase window fashions that let in lots of light, and use artificial lighting that’s bright and warm.

More ideas:

  • Add touches from the sea, such as coral and shells made into lamps, chandeliers, boxes and decorative items.
  • Install boat fittings in your kitchen or bath, such as hinges, lanterns and pulls.
  • Use fabrics, throws, pillows, table linens and bed linens with beach motifs, palm trees, surfers and boats.
  • Add artwork that depicts the sea, birds, fish or surfers.

You can even display a real boat in your house!! Or a model of a boat.

Sail into a new interior look with a beach theme. You’ll feel like you live by the shore every day. For more ideas or help with your next design project, contact the team at Delux Drapery & Shade Co..

Pillows Can Add Interest and Style to Your Decor

27 Apr

Pillow Talk

Pillows2Seasons change and so does our mood; When spring approaches you feel like your soul is craving colors, and fun, floral, exciting patterns. And when fall comes, we tend to look for cozier neutrals and reds. So instead of changing a whole room or switching furniture to give the room a makeover, try switching or adding throw pillows and cushions every season to add more pizazz and fun to a room. A Pillow or a cushion is a versatile accessory that comes in endless styles, colors, and patterns. But keep in mind that having too many pillows can end up resulting not only in adding discomfort, but also a distraction in the decoration. So here are some tips that will help you incorporate a new element in the room:

  1. You can start by picking a color or colors
  2. opposites attract so don’t be afraid of adding a completely different color to a room
  3. Don’t be afraid to put different patterns together – Or you can simply stick to the one pattern, one solid theme
  4. For Smooth surfaces, we suggest adding textures for a more interesting look
  5. Mix in different shapes and sizes of pillows together to add dimension, but don’t overdo it
  6. Choose between an even number or an odd number arrangement depending on the style of roomPillows1

It’s not all about the arrangement of color choice or number of pillows that you might want to consider, but also the style and trim of pillows. here are some styles to choose from:

  1. knife edge pillow: the simplest of them all, which has the tapered, polished look
  2. self-welted pillow: it’s basically a knife edge with a banding of the same fabric around it
  3. ShowcaseHome1websiteTurkish corner pillow which is also known as the pleated corner pillow. And although this style tends to be more traditional, it can easily be incorporated into a more contemporary or modern style by choosing appropriate fabrics
  4. embellished pillow: finally, the funnest of them all. You can choose to embellish your pillow by adding a colorful cord, fringe, tassel fringe, or lace
  5. Also, you can add a personal touch to your pillow, like a photo, handmade applique, or a monogram

And after you and your pillows have taken the journey together, let them be the storyteller.

Choosing beautiful fabrics can make a material change in your decor.

6 Apr

Fabric1Wise fabric choices can inspire your entire decorating plan.

Fabrics are used on so many surfaces in most homes. In fact, fabric is one of the most important elements as you make your interior design plans. Fabrics even set the mood for a room and influence the way you feel.
Fabric2

The sheer number of fabric choices can be intimidating; that’s why it’s helpful to work with a professional.

Natural fabrics include cotton, leather, linen, silk, suede and wool, while synthetics include acetate, acrylic, microfiber, nylon, olefin, polyester, rayon and vinyl. Synthetics tend to be more durable than natural fibers, but not always. A lot depends on the finish applied to a fabric or the weave that’s used, as much as the inherent fabric itself.

The most obvious initial decisions are:

  • Fabric color family
  • Whether fabric is solid color or has a pattern
  • Fabric texture and weave
  • Whether fabric is woven, crocheted, knit or pressed

Select fabric first for beauty since the look of your home is paramount, but also consider how your fabric will be usedFabric3 so you’ll be happy with your decision over the long term. For example, fabrics that are optimal for a heavily-used great room sofa will be quite different than those for a seldom-used decorative chair in your entry. Always think about durability and stain resistance if you have pets or children. Also consider how much damaging sunlight enters a room.

Your fabric choices create the underpinning of your interior design plan and are critical to the beauty of your rooms. Consider fabrics carefully and get professional advice before you buy.

Chocolate is more than a delicious, sweet treat.

30 Mar

It’s a bold and luscious interior design choice.Chocolate1

Just like the chocolate we love to eat, the color chocolate used in interior décor is dark, luscious and rich.
Chocolate is a bold color that can be used in a similar way as black, but with more interest and a bit of softness. This beautiful color can communicate high-style or it can be very warm and inviting, depending how you use it.

  • Together with pastels, such as baby blue, light pink or butter yellowChocolate2
  • Layered with several lighter neutrals, such as cream, taupe, gray and beige
  • Paired with snowy white
  • Integrated with earth tones, like gold, apricot and sage green
  • Combined with bold colors, such as tangerine, acid green or tomato red

Like most dark colors, chocolate works best as an accent rather than as the predominant color in a room. And it’s important to surround large areas of chocolate with light colors to ensure a room doesn’t appear dark and closed.Consider these design elements for a touch of chocolate in your house:Chocolate3

  • A painted accent wall
  • Rugs and carpeting
  • Fabrics for upholstery, draperies and headboards
  • Table, bed and bath linens
  • Lacquer surfaces, such as table tops and furniture
  • Tile, backsplashes and countertops in kitchen and bath

Ready for an interior design color that reminds you of one of your favorite treats? Think chocolate for decorating this year.

Plush Bedding Is So Enjoyable!

22 Jul

Plush bedding is one of the most enjoyable investments you can make in your home.

It’s an enhancement you’ll appreciate every night.
Where do you spend more hours each day than in your bed? Why not dial up the luxury and sinkplush bedding1
into a comforting haven each night when you go to sleep?
Making over your bed linens is one of the easiest and most reasonably priced enhancements you can make to your home. It will make you feel pampered every day and every night.
The look and feel of the fabrics. You can choose among many design schemes when selecting bedding, including sophisticated, elegant, feminine, masculine, zen or whimsical, but whatever the look, comfort is always key.

ShowcaseHome1Make sure the fabrics you select feel good on your skin. Soft choices for sheets and pillows include high-thread-count cotton, smooth silk and toasty flannel.
The colors. Some people like their bedroom linens to have the soothing look of neutrals without pattern, while others like the energy of bolder colors and patterns. It’s your choice. Popular patterns include floral, geometric, stripes, medallions, seaside prints, paisley, or even a patchwork quilt for a cozy look. You can also add interest by using solid color bedding with borders in a different color or gentle pattern.

The pillows. Have you noticed that “more is better” is the strategy with bed pillows these days? First you have the pillows you actually lay your head on to sleep. Then you can add complementary shams and, on top of those, decorative pillows in a variety of colors, patterns, shapes and sizes.

Sink into soft, luxurious bedding every evening when you go to bed, and you’ll wake up in a better mood. Invest in new bedding for pure enjoyment!

Prints, Pattern, Colors All In One Room? Part One.

1 Apr

Mix It Up Like a Pro

“Conjunction junction, what’s your function?”  Remember that from when you were a kid?  You learned about “this and that”, “this or that”, and “not this, but that”.  In design, when we see patterns, we tend to think “this OR that”.  BUT…we are here to tell you it’s “this AND that”.  Mixing prints and patterns isn’t so scary once you understand the basics.

Part 1: Getting Started

Choose 3 or More-Starting With One Big BoldMix It Like a Pro pt1-1

Start with a focal point- it could be an area rug, wallpaper or a large print in upholstery that you love. This will be the base upon which you will build, incorporating color and patterns that coordinate with your focal point. To get depth and create interest, use multiple scales of at least three patterns. Don’t be afraid to bring multiples together, as long as you keep the values close.

Mix It Like a Pro pt1-2Find Inspiration via Theme

Maybe you like the Asian inspiration of chinois fabric, or a modern tropical focus with birds and flowers.  Any theme is a good way to get some ideas for various kinds of prints.

Picking ColorsMix It Like a Pro pt1-4

Do you have a favorite color?  Go with it!  Find a bunch of different prints in one color family and keep the same intensity of shades.  For example, if you go pastel, keep all of the shades pastel.

Blend similar to ease into pattern and print coordinating and to soften the look.  If you are unsure about mixing multiple colors, begin with just two.  Blue and green are great choices because they are next to each other on the color wheel.  And you can use a solid of each to tie it all together.  Just be sure to stick to the same intensity as you would for a single color scheme.

Or perhaps a white and a color is more your style.  White is great for filing in negative space when you have a color you are really loving and all the prints you are finding in it.

This is where you get excited and rush out to find all the things to make your home brand new.  But wait, there’s more.  Check out the next blog to get detailed hints on where to go from here.

2015 Trends in Interior Design

25 Mar

New Year, New Trends: What You Will See in 2015

Every year we see an insurgence of ideas in design that reflect the changes in the world and economy.  Sometimes they creep up slowly and sometimes it’s an immediate BAM!  Here are a few things to keep your eye out for this year:

1: Colors, Patterns & PrintsDesign 2015-mixpatterns2

Beige is a thing of the past!  Color has never been so diverse.  Sophisticated basics and gentle, muted pastels will be mixed with deep, vibrant jewel tones that will be working for the modern, the contemporary and the traditional décor.  Prints and pattern are definitely back on the rise as well.  Be prepared for a mix of geometric and floral; animal print and stripe; organic and industrial.  This plays into the merging of cultures we are starting to see.  We will have more about this later.

Design 2015-rustic-bathroom2: Natural World

Textures derived from nature, whether they are animal, mineral or vegetable are in.  Think botany, raw wood, stone and organic shapes that soften the rigid look of the modern home. Look for fabric, materials and finishes to appear authentic and use them in simple ways to appreciate their beauty.

3: Matte Finishes and Industrial DesignDesign 2015-Industrial-Wood-Coffee-Table

A matte finish gives an object a raw, edgy look and also allows you to appreciate the overall form and material that an item is made of.  This trend is growing in everything from lighting, furniture, and accessories, to kitchens and bathrooms.  Industrial style pieces in the home have been a staple in the past few years, and there is a continuing love to the look and character of these pieces.  Additionally, there is a lean towards copper, pewter, gold and other metal accents over chrome and stainless steel.

4: Crafted with Care and Environmentally Friendly

Our appreciation for items made by human hands and a learned skill is undergoing resurgence. Craft made items and those with a unique one off “handmade like” feel offer us the chance to have pieces that we perceive as “authentic” in a widely mechanized and mass produced world.  This goes hand in hand with the mainstream idea of eco-friendly products.

This just skims the top of what we are seeing as growing movements.  What will you do this year?

Custom Furniture or Off The Showroom Floor?

18 Mar

Showroom Showdown: Custom Furniture vs. Store Bought

Today you’ll discover why you should be looking at custom furniture instead of store bought. When you work in the design field, it’s fun to go shopping for special items for the home. It’s also easy for us to know when to invest our money. For most consumers out there, this is not so. Custom furniture is often labeled as too expensive when really, for something being used everyday it should be exactly what you need and worth the cost of quality. Before you rule out custom, consider the following:Child's Pink sofa upholstery

  • Functionality/Spatial Needs– How many times have you gotten a sofa home to discover it doesn’t quite fit the way you want it to? Or what if you have an odd amount of space allotted for your desk? You will search endlessly if you only look at what is mass produced. Choosing something custom allows you to determine your needs and what you have to work with so that your furniture helps, not hinders, the functionality of your space.
  • custom sofaStyle/One of a Kind– Custom furniture is a conversation piece! You will have a unique piece that no one else has. And maybe you’re not into the colors and prints you see in the stores. You will get the opportunity to put your personality into your furniture instead of trying to fit in a box with the current trends.
  • Price/Quality– More often than not, custom furniture isn’t more expensive than store bought. There’s a lot of overhead that goes into mass produced furniture for retail chains. And in this instance, the craftsmanship definitely beats out the assembly line. Artisans take pride in their work and strive to make quality products. After all, they want return customers too.michael-thomas chair
  • Made in America– Last but not least, your custom piece is probably made here in America. North Carolina is widely known as the furniture capital and is home to MT Company-a company that has many ways to customize your furniture.
