Spring Spruce Up

7 Feb

The long Michigan winter is almost over, which leaves us all with the same question: what now?

If you were stuck inside all winter like many of us were, you probably got very acquainted with your window treatments. If your cabin fever has you itching to redo them, Delux Drapery & Shade Co. in Ann Arbor, Michigan has some ideas to set you on your way.

Go Cellular

Whether you’re environmentally conscious or just conscious of your own budget, it’s safe to say that we’re all trying to conserve energy in one way or another this year. Did you know that your window treatments can help you do that? Hunter Douglas offers a variety of honeycomb and cellular shades, which on top of fulfilling your needs for light filtering, can also save you some hard-earned cash. The hollow pockets, similar to honeycombs, within cellular shades actually trap air coming in from outside, providing much-needed insulation to your home. Particularly once the temperatures start fluctuating in the spring, these shades can keep the temperature in your home consistent without you having the fiddle with the thermostat.

Go Motorized

We’ve all seen the cheesy infomercials for motorized outdoor awnings that aired in the 1980’s and 1990’s. But that, thankfully, wasn’t the end for motorized window treatments. They’ve come a long way, and Hunter Douglas is on the cutting edge of their improvement. If you truly want to keep up with the times, consider getting motorized window treatments. Not only are Hunter Douglas’s PowerView® motorized window treatments convenient, they’re also a technological marvel. By installing the PowerView® app, you can control your window treatments from anywhere in the world that has Wi-Fi all from your smartphone or tablet. If that isn’t stepping into the future, what is?

Go Bold

You don’t have to revitalize your energy bill or how “smart” your house is to partake in some of the rebirth this season is famous for. If you want to revitalize your style instead, why not order a set of Hunter Douglas roller shades for your home? Roller shades are a wonderful confluence of design sensibilities, from the retro silhouette of their design, to their large variety of fabrics. Roller shades are made of one contiguous piece of fabric, and since that fabric isn’t obstructed by pleats or vanes, you can show off large, bold prints or patterns on your shades, which are all the rage this year.

Did any of these tips get you thinking about how to redo your window treatments? If so, stop by Delux Drapery & Shade Co. in Ann Arbor, Michigan to get started on revitalizing your home today. We also proudly serve Ypsilanti, Saline, Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester, Howell, Brighton, all of Washtenaw County and all surrounding communities.

Roman Shades

5 Aug

When in Rome…
Roman shades have been a part of interior design for centuries.
They were first used at the Colosseum in Rome RomanSh1. When the Romans added a retractable shade it was easier for people to enjoy the spectacle going on down below when they weren’t exposed to the hot sun. Then, with all the building going on in Rome, using these flat pieces of fabric that go up and down with the pull of a string helped keep the dust out of the home. Ever since, the Roman shade has evolved to all the exciting options that are available now.

There are many terms for the different styles of Roman shades and that can be confusing if you’ve never looked for one before. After all, isn’t a shade just a shade? Actually, no. As you are deciding what to get, start with the two basic options: hobbled or flat. There are alternatives for each, but this gets you started.

Hobbled is called RomanSh2by many names: waterfall, tiered, looped. Technically they are all different because of the different amount of fabric between folds. Traditionally a hobbled shade will have 5” folds, whereas a waterfall would have 7”.  But they still give the effect of a ripple in each version. You can use these shades in any room of the home to give it a dressier feel.
RomanSh3

Flat is just that. It can have a look that shows where the fabric overlays or it can be smooth with no seams visible from the front. These tend to be casual, but that isn’t to say you couldn’t use an elegant fabric with this construction. Using a formal-looking fabric with a flat Roman shade would lend a modern feel to a room. RomanSh4

Flat Roman shades can be tailored, relaxed, batten front, batten back, or both…the list goes on.

RomanSh5                                                                                                  There are a few kinds that could be considered specialty like an Austrian  or balloon shade. But again, there are so many styles to choose from so just take your time and look through all the pictures you want before your purchase. Most of the time your Roman shade will be a custom piece so make it your own!

Sliding Door Window Solutions

29 Jul

Sliding Doors Can Be Fun or a Challenge

There are few things more exciting than being a first time homeowner. It can be thrilling to decorate your new home to fit your taste and style. But as you finish laying down the floor, slapping paint on the walls, you get to the
daunting task of the windows. Specifically, the sliding glass door that takes you to your new backyard. A lot has changed and there are many options now besides vertical blinds. So before you panic, here are some suggestions:

SlidingDoor2Honeycomb– Many don’t realize a honeycomb shade can come as a vertical option. And just like the shades you put in your window, they insulate well.SlidingDoor6

Sliding Panels– A streamlined, contemporary option that can be accomplished with woven wood, roller shade fabric, or screen shade material.

Doorwall ShuttersPlantation Shutters- A classic option for any window. Whether they bi-fold, slide or open like French doors they will be durable and beautiful in any home.

Window Shadings– They have the look of drapery with the function of a vertical blind. These still SlidingDoor7have open/close louvers and the option of pulling all to one side or splitting in the middle like a vertical blind. But these give a softer feel to the room because of the sheer fabric overlay. They are great for filtering in light and giving you some privacy.

Drapery– There are many ways to hang drapery over a sliding glass door. You can make the look formal or casual, traditional or contemporary. A traditional pinch pleat drapery moves on a traverse rod that opens SlidingDoor5with the ease of pulling a string. You can also look into grommet panels that easily slide over a rod. And as a combination of both, if you want a more decorative rod for your pinch pleat drapery, look into a rod with rings. Even on a larger sliding door where you will need extra supports, there are rings that are not complete circles so they can slide over the brackets.

This is just a starting point for you to see what is more your style then you
can take it from there with fabric and color. Let us know what style you like!

Plantation Shutters, A Brief History

27 May

Why are plantation shutters so expensive?

plantationshutters1

Shutters have been dressing windows for centuries.  You may associate them with the old south and the regal look they gave the massive homes, but they have been around since ancient Greece.  In that tropical area, they served three functions: protection from the weather, ventilation and light control.  They originally had fixed louvers and were made out of marble which is what made them so strong against the weather.  However, the marble is what made them only affordable to the wealthy, thus their prestige begins.

plantationshutters2As the popularity of the shutters spread throughout the Mediterranean, wood became the new norm.  The louvers became moveable and created more functionality.  In medieval Europe they served as a security measure with a steel bar that locked them close .  And because of their increased function, you began seeing them in palaces, like The Andul Royal Palace in India  or the Palace of Versailles in France.

Then as the Spanish and the English started colonizing the Americas, the shutter fad came with them.  The southern states, taking after the Spanish influence, began using them in their large manor homes where they took on the name ‘plantation shutters’. In the south, you saw the use of large louvers and they were almost always painted white.

In the New England area, the louvers were smaller and used in a café style, similar to how they were in England during the Victorian Era.

If you’ve ever gone shopping for shutters, you’ve probably had the jaw-plantationshutters5dropping experience of the first time you heard the price.  Shutters are definitely an investment.  They are durable, stunning to look at and their functionality is unparalleled.  They just happen to be the most expensive thing you can put on your window.  Shutters are the ONE window treatment that add to the appraisal value of the home so consider how this may help you in the future.  But after hearing the back story of their evolution, you can see they stand the test of time.

Ten Things To Consider Before You Schedule A Designer

3 Mar

If you are considering working with a designer or decorator for window treatments,  think about what you would like to achieve with your new window treatments.  We like to be helpful in getting just the right treatment for the right situation and have found it helps to eliminate confusion from all the options and possibilities that exist.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • Have you noticed sun damage on your furniture, carpeting, rugs or flooring?
  • Would you like to cut down on the ultraviolet rays from the sun, but yet see out of your windows?
  • Does the sun create too much heat in one or more of your rooms?
  • Do you need to cut the glare from the sun on your television or computer screen?
  • Is privacy a concern for you?
  • Do you loose heat through your windows?
  • Would you like to soften the lines of your windows with draperies or valances?
  • Have you considered what style and color of drapery or valance you would like? If not, we are happy to help you with pictures and sketches.
  • Have you thought of incorporating decorative hardware?
  • Do you have a budget, and are you willing to share it with your designer?

These are answers that will help your designer narrow choices to what is best suited for your and your needs. Sharing your budget is so important because it helps your designer find the right product from the beginning of the project. It’s good to know if you need a treatment for privacy, or just to help with energy efficiency.

Interior Design Ideas for Your Guest Bedroom

7 Oct

Adding just the right touches to your guest room can help overnight visitors savor their stay with you.

Sometimes a guest room can seem cold and sterile or just an afterthought space you use to store unwanted items and old furniture. The holidays are coming soon. That means guests may be coming to stay – and you can make their stay much more enjoyable with just a few touches. An engaging guest room doesn’t have to do with the size of the room or the cost of the furnishings, but with the details you pay close attention to. Think about the amenities you like when you stay in a nice hotel, and make those available to your guests!

• Make the room luxurious with a high-quality mattress and good linens.

Photo from Country Living

• Have several blankets or throws available, so guests can adjust to their own comfort level.

• Provide pillows in a couple of firmness levels and various stuffing materials.

• Arrange side tables or nightstands on both sides of the bed, with lamps that have effective lighting for reading.

• Purchase window treatments that block out the morning light and provide privacy.

If there’s space, arrange a sitting area with a small table, a comfortable chair or two, and good lighting. Also think about where people can put their suitcases – maybe you can add a bench at the foot of the bed or a folding luggage rack.

Clean your junk out the closet too, so there’s at least a small amount of space for people to hang their clothes and store their shoes out of site. Also have at least one small bureau with a drawer or two available for guests to put away their t-shirts and socks. And if you’re remodeling or adding on a guest room, make sure you include plenty of plugs for recharging portable devices.

Enhance your guest room this fall to be ready for holiday visitors. But don’t make your guest room too comfortable – or your visitors may never leave!
